About

A community built on hope, belonging, and lived experience

The Well Communities is a notforprofit organisation founded in 2012 on a simple belief: recovery and wellbeing are possible for everyone. From our hubs in Barrow, Morecambe, Carlisle, and Kendal, we work at the heart of local communities to support people’s health, confidence, and connection.

Our approach is rooted in recoveryoriented systems of care. That means we don’t just focus on treatment – we focus on hope, resilience, and lasting change. We bring together lived experience, professional expertise, and strong community partnerships to create safe, supportive spaces where people can heal, grow, and reconnect with life.

Through housing, training, mentoring, and social activities, we help people feel included, empowered, and part of something bigger.

Lived experience is at the heart of everything we do

Support at The Well Communities is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Everything we offer is free to members and delivered by people who truly understand – because many of us have walked similar paths.

Our staff and volunteers bring lived experience of addiction, mental health challenges, offending behaviour, childhood trauma, learning difficulties, domestic abuse, and homelessness. This means we don’t just offer support; we offer empathy, understanding, and hope.

Over the past decade, we’ve grown into a trusted and respected recovery community across Cumbria, North Lancashire, and beyond. Today, 64.5% of our staff once used our services – a powerful reminder that recovery is not only possible, but transformative.

Our approach is different, and it works. Where other services may fall short, our unique mix of compassion, experience, and expertise helps people find a way forward. We work alongside the NHS, police, probation, prisons, social services, and local councils – but at the centre of everything is community, walking side by side toward recovery.

Our flexible Hub & Spoke model ensures people can access the support that works best for them, wherever they are in their journey.

Recovery isn’t something you have to do alone.

Our Misson

To bring hope and healing to individuals and families affected by substance misuse – supporting them to rebuild their lives, strengthen resilience, and reconnect with their communities.

We believe recovery is possible for everyone. Whether you’re seeking support for yourself or someone you care about, we’re here to help make recovery a reality across North West England.

Our Values

Creating the right culture: our Core Conditions for Recovery

We believe services should be built around the community – not the other way around. Our Core Conditions for Recovery guide our daily practice and help us create a trauma safe environment where people feel seen, supported, and able to grow. The values that shape our community and our work are:

  • Safety: We create safe environments for our staff, our members, and the wider recovery community. Safety is the foundation of everything we do.
  • Resilience: Recovery is a journey that requires strength and perseverance. We build resilience in ourselves and in the people we support, helping each other through challenging times.
  • Integrity: We work with honesty, transparency, and accountability. Integrity builds the trusting, collaborative relationships that make recovery possible.
  • Empowerment: Everyone has the right to choose their own path. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our members, colleagues, and partners to find solutions together.
  • Love: We lead with compassion. We will love everyone who enters our service until they are able to love themselves.

Our Direction Principles

  • Transform: Strengthen our operational foundations by stabilising the organisation, getting the basics right, and relentlessly focusing on quality and consistency. We will continue to invest in our people through training, supervision, and our Future Leaders Academy.
  • Strengthen: Focus on the areas where we make the greatest impact. Through transparency and collaboration, we will build strong relationships with commissioners, local authorities, statutory services, and VCFSE partners.
  • Grow: Develop existing and new work streams where the power of lived experience can bring tangible benefits to individuals, families, and communities across our geographical footprint.
