Recovery Comes to West Cumbria!
The Well Communities is bringing a renewed focus on recovery to West Cumbria, with the launch of a new service designed to support individuals affected by drug and alcohol use.
For too long, many people across West Cumbria have faced significant challenges in accessing the consistent, high-quality support they need to begin and sustain their recovery journeys. That is now set to change.
The Well Communities is pleased to announce the opening of a new recovery support service in Workington. The service will offer a range of tailored support, including advice, guidance, and personalised recovery planning, alongside access to recovery housing. The aim is to provide people with the stability, structure, and encouragement they need to rebuild their lives.
A key part of the offer will be the SMMILES Project, which provides specialist support for individuals experiencing both mental ill health and substance use. The project focuses on delivering flexible, person-centred support at the right time, ensuring people are not left to navigate complex challenges alone.
In addition to the Workington service, The Well Communities is proud to be part of the wider recovery offer at Hope Haven in Whitehaven, strengthening a network of support across the West Cumbria area.

These developments follow an extensive programme of local engagement, which has demonstrated strong support for improving recovery provision in the region. The Well Communities has worked closely with local citizens, community members, and key stakeholders to shape its approach.
Engagement has included conversations and collaboration with:
- Local residents and community representatives
- Josh MacAlister MP for Workington and Whitehaven
- Leadership at Northside Primary School
- Community leaders from Northside Community Centre
- Neighbouring residents and partners
This collaborative approach reflects The Well Communities’ commitment to working alongside communities and recognising the value of lived experience in shaping meaningful services.
Looking ahead, the organisation will continue to build on this momentum, with plans to host a local drop-in session in the coming weeks. This will provide an opportunity for residents, partners, and anyone interested to find out more, meet the team, and explore how they can be part of strengthening recovery in West Cumbria.
David Blacklock, CEO of The Well Communities, said:
“This is an important step forward for West Cumbria. We know the strength that exists within communities, and by combining that with tailored support and lived experience, we can create real opportunities for recovery. We are proud to be part of this journey and look forward to working alongside local people to make it a success.”
The Well Communities remains committed to creating inclusive, compassionate environments where recovery is not only possible, but sustainable and where individuals are supported to thrive.
